Best when the panel is already full.
The situation. You want a fast Level 2 charger. Your panel is maxed out on capacity, on breaker spaces, or both.
What it does. The bundled monitor clamps onto your main service conductors and reads the whole house in real time. When the dryer or the AC kicks in, the charger backs its own speed down to keep the main breaker inside its rating. When the house goes quiet, it speeds back up.
Why it matters. That is often the difference between an install this month and a service upgrade first. Best value of the four, no subscription, and the only one on this list we would call the obvious choice for a house with a tight panel.
Best when two cars have to share one circuit.
The situation. A garage or townhome with one 50 A or 60 A circuit available, and two or more vehicles to charge.
What it does. Units talk to each other locally and split the available amperage between whichever cars are actually plugged in. No cloud service in the middle, so nothing stops working if an account lapses.
Why it matters. Compact, long cable, and it avoids running a second circuit for a second car, usually the expensive part of a two-car setup.
Best when the panel has room and you want the premium unit.
The situation. One vehicle, a service with capacity already, and a preference for the most polished hardware and app.
What it does. Hardwired, or plugged into a NEMA 14-50 or 6-50 receptacle. The app sets a fixed maximum output, tracks charging history, and updates firmware over your Wi-Fi.
Sizes. Plugged in, it is capped at 40 A, because a 50 A receptacle will not carry more than that continuously. Hardwired, the usual size is 48 A on a 60 A circuit, and it will run 50 A on a 70 A circuit. The difference between those last two is about two miles of range per hour, so the 60 A option is normally the better trade unless the service has room to spare.
Worth knowing. Its load management is a fixed setting, not dynamic. You choose a ceiling and it holds there. That is fine when the service has headroom. It will not get you out of a service upgrade the way the Emporia Pro can.
Best when a lot of vehicles share limited infrastructure.
The situation. A delivery fleet, a warehouse, or an apartment building charging four to twenty vehicles off supply that was never designed for it.
What it does. A heavy-duty sub-panel called the EVMC, or Electric Vehicle Master Controller, cycles power down the line, turning one high-amperage circuit into several working ports.
Why it matters. The saving is not in the hardware, it is in the trenching, conduit and service capacity you do not have to add. On a retrofit that is usually the difference between a viable project and a shelved one.
Four things worth settling before the money leaves your account. None of them are about the charger. They are about the house, the car and the utility.
NACS is where the industry has gone. Ford, GM, Rivian, Hyundai and Kia have all moved new vehicles onto it. That is true, and it is the wrong reason to pick a home charger.
Every NACS vehicle ships with a J1772 adapter in the trunk. The manufacturers include it as standard. So a J1772 charger, which is what most Level 2 units on sale still are, will charge a new NACS car on day one, at the same speed, with hardware you already own.
Go the other way and the adapter is something you buy. A native NACS charger cannot serve a J1772 car without one, and that is the situation people actually end up in: a second car, a teenager’s hand-me-down, a visitor. Our default is J1772 unless every vehicle that will ever use it is NACS. If you want the native plug for a single-Tesla household, that is a fair choice. Just make it for the tidiness, not because you have been told J1772 is on the way out.
Rebates are usually tied to a published list of qualifying models, and the list is narrower than the market. Buying first and checking second is how people leave several hundred dollars on the table.
Around here that means Seattle City Light or Puget Sound Energy depending on which side of the line you are on, and the programmes change. We check the current list as part of quoting, because it sometimes changes which unit we would recommend.
Charge ports are in different places on different cars: front wing, rear quarter, nose. A cable that suits the car you have may not suit the next one, and stretching one taut across a garage floor is how they get damaged.
Measure from where the unit would mount to where the port sits when the car is parked the way you actually park it, then add slack for parking the other way round. That number decides the cable length. It is the cheapest decision on this page to get right and one of the more annoying to fix afterwards.
A 32 A unit puts back somewhere around 23–27 miles of range an hour, depending on the car. Over a ten-hour overnight that is well past what most people drive in a day, and it needs a 40 A circuit rather than a 60 or 70 A one.
That difference is not about the charger. It is about whether your existing service carries it. Stepping down one size sometimes turns a service upgrade into an ordinary afternoon’s work. It is a real trade, though, not a free one: you are choosing slower charging, and if you drive long distances daily you may want the speed. Run the numbers before you decide →
Hardwiring is the better default for a permanent install, and the difference is not just tidiness.
Plug it in and the circuit needs GFCI protection under NEC 625.54. That is not because the charger is unsafe; every Level 2 unit already has ground-fault protection built into it. It is because a receptacle is an opening in the system, and once one exists the protection has to suit whatever ends up plugged into it, not just the charger you had in mind. The catch is that GFCI stacked on top of the charger’s own monitoring is a known source of nuisance tripping.
Hardwire it and that requirement falls to the manufacturer. Some units call for GFCI on the circuit, some do not, and the installation instructions decide it. Those instructions are not a suggestion. NEC 110.3(B) makes listed equipment instructions enforceable, so we read them before we quote rather than after.
Plug-in still has its place. If you rent, or expect to take the charger with you, a NEMA 14-50 is a reasonable trade. Just note a receptacle caps you at 40 A continuous, so the fastest units are hardwired only.
Often not. A charger with dynamic load management, the Emporia Pro on this list, watches your panel’s total draw and throttles the car down when the house gets busy, which can keep an install inside the service you already have.
It is a trade rather than a free pass. On a cold evening with the dryer running you get a slower charge, and it only helps where the rest of the load calculation leaves room in the first place. The equipment also has to be listed for the purpose and accepted by your inspector. Not every arrangement that sounds like load management qualifies as one.
