The National Electrical Code Article 680 governs spa wiring, and a proper installation is what keeps the tub both safe and insurable. Here is what a correct hookup requires:

1. On-Site Evaluation We check your spa's electrical requirements against its nameplate, look at your panel's available capacity, and plan the cleanest route from the panel to the tub. We confirm the disconnect location and how the wiring will be run and protected.
2. Written Scope & Quote You receive a clear written quote covering labor, materials, the disconnect, permit fees, and inspection coordination. No surprise add-ons after the work starts.
3. Permit Application We pull the electrical permit with your local jurisdiction. Spa circuits are inspected work, and an unpermitted installation can void your homeowner's insurance and create problems at resale.
4. Installation We install the breaker, run the dedicated circuit, mount the GFCI disconnect within sight of the tub, terminate at the spa, and complete the bonding. When your panel has capacity, this is typically finished in part of a day.

Why does a hot tub need a disconnect?Code, and safety around water+

NEC 680.13 requires a means to disconnect all ungrounded conductors that is readily accessible, within sight of the equipment, and at least five feet horizontally from the inside walls of the tub. Two details matter and are widely got wrong. The five feet is measured from the water's edge along the shortest path someone would actually walk, not as a straight line through the tub. And a permanently installed barrier giving a five foot reach path satisfies the distance on its own. The code does not require the disconnect to be lockable; we install a lockable one anyway, because it is the right hardware for anyone who has to work on the tub.
