A hot tub is one of the few places in a home where people sit in water, wet, while surrounded by electrical equipment. Because of that, the electrical code (NEC Article 680) sets very specific distances between the tub and anything electrical, plus a few protections you can't see. These are the rules an inspector checks, and the reasons a lot of DIY hot tub hookups don't pass. Here's the picture, then the details.
Receptacles: nothing closer than 6 feet
No receptacle (outlet) may be installed within 6 feet of the inside walls of the tub. Beyond that, the code actually requires at least one general-purpose 125-volt GFCI receptacle located between 6 and 20 feet away, so there's a safe place to plug in without stringing an extension cord across the yard. And every 125-volt receptacle within 20 feet of the tub has to be GFCI-protected. The 6-foot line keeps outlets out of arm's reach of someone in the water; the required outlet keeps people from improvising a dangerous one.
Switches and the disconnect: at least 5 feet
Any switch has to sit at least 5 feet from the inside walls of the tub, unless a permanent wall or barrier separates it. On top of that, a hot tub needs a maintenance disconnect: a means to cut all power to the tub that is readily accessible, within sight of the equipment, and at least 5 feet away. That distance matters, it's close enough to reach in a hurry, but far enough that no one operates it while touching the water. The "within sight" rule means whoever is servicing the tub can see that the power is actually off.
GFCI protection
The whole hot tub circuit must be GFCI-protected. A GFCI watches the current going out and coming back, and if even a small amount leaks (for example, through a person), it trips in a fraction of a second. Around water, that's the difference between a startle and a tragedy. This is non-negotiable and is one of the most common things missing on older or self-installed tubs.
Bonding: the part nobody sees
This is the requirement most people have never heard of, and it's one of the most important. All the metal in and around the tub, the shell, pumps, heater, metal equipment, railings, and other metal within 5 feet, has to be tied together into an equipotential bond using a #8 solid copper wire. The goal isn't to carry normal current; it's to make sure every metal thing you might touch is at the same electrical potential, so there's never a voltage difference between, say, a grab rail and the water. Skipping the bond can leave a tub that works perfectly but delivers a shock under a fault.
Overhead clearances, and yes, that includes string lights
If there are overhead power or service lines, the tub can't sit under them: they have to be at least 22.5 feet above the maximum water level (per the clearance table in 680.9). It's easy to overlook when picking a spot in the yard, and it's not something you can fix after the deck is built.
The code also covers the decorative lighting people love to hang over a hot tub. Festoon lighting (those strings of bulbs), ornamental lighting, and holiday or Christmas-type string lights all count as overhead lighting under 680.22(B), and they have to stay up at the required height, generally at least 12 feet above the water in the zone around the tub, rather than drooping low over people in the water. The ambiance is fine; it just has to be hung high enough, and the exact clearance can change depending on the setup.
⚠️ Why hot tub hookups need a permit and a pro
A hot tub draws a large, continuous load and puts people in water next to it, which is exactly why the code is this specific. In King County the work requires an electrical permit and inspection, and the clearances, bonding, GFCI, and disconnect all get checked.
