Your electrical panel (electricians call it a load center) looks intimidating with the cover off, but it's really just a handful of parts doing straightforward jobs. The short version
Power comes in from the utility, lands on the main breaker, and energizes two hot bus bars running down the center. Each branch breaker taps those bars to feed one circuit, and its real job is to limit that circuit's current: a breaker doesn't provide power, it cuts the circuit off if it tries to draw more than it should. The white neutral wires return current to the neutral bar, and the bare ground wires land on the ground bar. At the first (service) panel those two are bonded together, commonly the same bar, so a fault has a safe path back and trips the breaker instead of energizing the box.
A single-pole breaker taps one hot bar for a 120-volt circuit (outlets, lights). A double-pole breaker spans both bars for a 240-volt circuit (dryer, range, EV charger, heat pump). One subtle but important rule: neutral and ground are bonded together only once, at the main service (where they're commonly the same bar), by the main bonding jumper. Every subpanel downstream keeps them separated.
⚠️ Leave the cover on
Even with the main breaker off, the service lugs and the line side of the main stay energized, they're fed directly by the utility, not through the breaker. Removing the dead front exposes lethal voltage. Looking is fine; opening it up is a job for a licensed electrician.
