By the time our War of the Currents guide picks up his story, Edison already had a working incandescent lamp and, in 1882, Pearl Street Station lighting a section of lower Manhattan, the first real commercial electric power system anywhere. It's worth being precise about what that actually meant on day one: the station's opening-day load, September 4, 1882, was roughly 400 incandescent lamps serving about 82 to 85 customers, nearly all nearby offices and businesses, The New York Times among the first, rather than homes broadly. There was no such thing yet as plugging in an appliance; electric lighting was the entire market Edison's system was built to serve, and it stayed that way for years. Within about a year that grew to roughly 10,000 lamps and over 500 customers, still lighting, just a lot more of it. The Smithsonian holds a detailed 1927 scale model of the station, showing the boiler room, the steam engines, and the generators customers nicknamed "Jumbo" after the famous elephant; it's worth a look to see just how much physical infrastructure it took to power a few city blocks of lightbulbs in 1882.
What he actually did
Edison built DC generating stations and pushed DC as the standard for the electrical industry he'd helped create. DC's structural problem, covered in the War of the Currents guide, was that it couldn't be transmitted efficiently over distance, meaning a station had to sit within about a mile of every customer it served. When Westinghouse and Tesla's AC system solved that problem, Edison fought it hard, including tactics, also covered in that guide, that didn't reflect especially well on him.
What makes him great, despite losing
Betting on the wrong long-term technology obscures what Edison actually got right: he didn't just invent a light bulb, he built the entire system around it, generation, distribution, metering, a viable business model, that made electric light something a city could actually buy. That systems-level thinking is arguably a bigger contribution than any single invention. He also didn't spend the rest of his career defending a losing position. After AC won, he moved on to other fields entirely, motion picture technology, alkaline storage batteries, and kept producing meaningful work for another three decades.
