Faraday had almost no formal education. He apprenticed to a London bookbinder as a teenager, and taught himself science by reading the books that passed through the shop. A customer eventually got him a ticket to hear a lecture by the chemist Humphry Davy, and Faraday later talked his way into a job as Davy's laboratory assistant. That was the entirety of his formal scientific training.
What he actually did
Building on Ørsted's discovery that electricity could produce magnetism, Faraday spent a decade trying to prove the reverse was also true. In 1831 he succeeded, using an iron ring with a separate coil wrapped around each side, one connected to a battery, the other to its own measuring circuit. He found that a changing magnetic field, not a steady one, induced a current in a nearby wire. Moving a magnet in and out of a coil produced current only while the magnet was actually moving. Within months, he'd built on that discovery to construct the first working generator, a copper disk spinning between the poles of a magnet.
What makes him great
Nearly every generator, motor, and transformer covered elsewhere on this site is, at its core, an application of the principle Faraday discovered and proved through his own hands, not inherited wealth, formal credentials, or institutional backing. He did the work himself, for a decade, with no guarantee it would lead anywhere, and it became the foundation the entire electrical grid still runs on today.
Sit with that for a second: a teenager binding other men's books, teaching himself science from the pages passing through his hands, ends up out-working the entire scientific establishment of his era on the single question that mattered most. Nobody handed him a lab, a title, or a reason to believe he'd succeed. He just kept testing the idea, year after year, until it worked. Everything electric that followed, every motor, every grid, every article on this site, traces back to that one apprentice who refused to stop.
