Henry was an American scientist working at what's now Albany Academy in New York, largely isolated from the European scientific community where most electromagnetic research was happening at the time.
What he actually did
In 1830, a full year before Faraday's famous 1831 experiments, Henry observed the same core phenomenon: a changing magnetic field inducing a current in a nearby wire. He didn't publish his results right away. By the time his work became widely known, Faraday had already published, pursued the discovery much further, and become permanently associated with it in the historical record. Henry went on to do significant work of his own regardless, including improvements to electromagnets that directly enabled the practical telegraph.
What makes him great
This is a case where being right first wasn't enough. Henry's story is a useful reminder that credit in the history of science often goes to whoever publishes and promotes a discovery, not necessarily whoever makes it first. He didn't spend his career resentful about it either: he went on to become the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, shaping how science was funded and shared in America for decades. The henry, the standard unit of electrical inductance used in circuit design today, is named after him, a quieter but permanent form of credit.
