Hans Christian Ørsted

1777 to 1851. The man who noticed the needle move.

Ørsted was a Danish physicist who, before 1820, spent over a decade suspecting a connection existed between electricity and magnetism without any way to prove it. Nobody at the time had shown the two forces had anything to do with each other at all.

What he actually did

On April 21, 1820, during a lecture demonstration, Ørsted ran current through a wire near a compass and watched the needle twitch and swing to point perpendicular to the wire, then swing back when the current stopped. It was a small, easy-to-miss effect, one his students mostly didn't register at all. Ørsted did, and understood immediately what he was looking at: proof that an electric current generates a magnetic field around itself. He published his findings within weeks, in Latin, so the whole European scientific community could read it at once.

What makes him great

He'd been looking for this connection for over ten years before he found it, and when a fleeting, easy-to-dismiss twitch of a needle finally showed up, he recognized its significance instantly rather than writing it off as an anomaly. That single observation is the reason the words "electromagnetism," and everything built on it, exist at all. Every article on this site, and every generator, motor, and transformer covered in them, traces its lineage back to that one twitching needle.
