Pixii was a Parisian instrument maker, a craftsman who built scientific apparatus for a living, not a credentialed physicist working out theory from first principles.
What he actually did
In 1832, just a year after Faraday published his work on electromagnetic induction, Pixii built the first practical dynamo based directly on that principle. His design used a hand-cranked permanent magnet spinning past a fixed coil wound around an iron core, producing a pulse of current every time a magnetic pole swept by. He also added a commutator, a split-metal contact suggested to him by André-Marie Ampère, which converted the alternating pulses into usable direct current.
What makes him great
Faraday proved the principle worked. Pixii is the one who turned it into an actual machine someone could crank by hand and get usable current out of, within a single year, and as a working craftsman rather than a research scientist with institutional resources behind him. He died in 1835, only three years after his dynamo, at just 26 or 27 years old. Nearly every generator built since traces its lineage through the design choices he made in that short window.
