William Stanley Jr.

1858 to 1916. Built the missing piece. Rarely gets mentioned for it.

Stanley was chief engineer at Westinghouse's Pittsburgh plant when ill health, worsened by the city's polluted air, forced him to relocate to Great Barrington, Massachusetts, the town where he'd grown up. That forced move became the setting for the work he's actually remembered for, when anyone remembers him at all.

What he actually did

Working largely alone through the winter of 1885 to 1886 in a small rented lab, financed partly by Westinghouse, Stanley refined an earlier European transformer design into something that could actually be manufactured and deployed. On March 20, 1886, he demonstrated the result: power left a 500V hydroelectric generator, climbed to 3,000V to make the trip efficiently, then dropped back to a lamp-safe 100V by the time it reached roughly twenty stores and offices on Great Barrington's Main Street. What makes him great

Tesla's motor and Westinghouse's business bet needed a way to actually move power over distance, and there wasn't one until Stanley built it, essentially by hand, in a small-town lab through a rough New England winter. Without his transformer, none of the rest of the AC story has anywhere to go. He's arguably the most load-bearing name in this entire series, and the one most likely to get left out of the popular telling entirely.

Picture the actual scene: a sick engineer, sent away from his job for his own health, alone in a rented factory space through a Massachusetts winter, hand-winding coil after coil with no certainty any of it would work. No headlines were waiting for him. No guarantee Westinghouse's gamble on Tesla would even pay off if he failed. He built it anyway, and everything that makes AC power practical, the grid running your lights right now, exists because that one unglamorous winter of work actually succeeded. Tesla gets the statue. Stanley built the part that made Tesla's idea usable at all.
