Critical Panel Hazards to Look For

🚨 Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok Panels

Commonly installed in homes built from the 1950s to the 1980s. Testing has proven that Stab-Lok breakers suffer an extremely high failure rate, frequently failing to trip during an overload or short circuit. 🚨 Zinsco or GTE-Zinsco Panels

Popular during the 1970s, these panels feature design flaws where the circuit breakers melt directly to the main bus bar. Once melted, the breaker can no longer trip, allowing massive amounts of continuous electrical current to flow unchecked into your home's framing walls. Read the full history →

🚨 Outdated 60A / 80A Banjo Meter Bases

Found on older homes across traditional Seattle and Renton neighborhoods. These round, banjo-shaped enclosures restrict your entire home's capacity and are physically incompatible with safe 200A service upgrades. They require professional modernization to meet modern utility hookup compliance.

🚨 Split-Bus Configuration Panels

Instead of one main breaker, these older panels split "off" across up to six separate switches, a cost-saving shortcut that was standard practice through the 1960s and '70s. Since the 2020 National Electrical Code, that shared-enclosure design is no longer permitted for new installations: even with all six switches thrown, the incoming service lugs stay energized, so a true shutdown still requires the utility to disconnect power at the meter. 🚨 Inadequate Panel Working Clearance

The National Electrical Code specifically prohibits electrical panels from being located inside clothes closets or bathrooms. Beyond that, any installation must provide a minimum of 3 feet of clear working space directly in front of the panel (unobstructed by doors, shelving, or stored items) so that a person can stand comfortably to operate breakers or work on wiring safely. Panels found crammed behind doors that swing across them, boxed in by cabinetry, or blocked by stored materials violate this clearance requirement regardless of how old the installation is. This clearance exists so electricians and first responders can shut down power quickly and safely in an emergency without arc-flash risk.

🚨 Unprotected Fuse Panels & Missing Dead Fronts

Older homes may still have fuse-based electrical systems with no protective dead front cover (the panel door or barrier that shields live bus bars and wiring from accidental contact). Without it, anyone opening the panel door is immediately exposed to energized copper components carrying lethal voltage. Fuse-based systems compound this risk: unlike modern breakers, fuses cannot be reset and are routinely replaced with oversized fuses that allow dangerous amounts of current to flow unchecked through household wiring, leading directly to overheating and fire.

🚨 Aging Knob-and-Tube Wiring

The original wiring in many pre-1950 King County homes. Knob-and-tube isn't automatically dangerous, but after 75-plus years its cloth-and-rubber insulation goes brittle and cracks open, it has no ground, and it's frequently buried under attic insulation, which traps the heat the system was designed to shed.
